“Pulmonology”

Pulmonologists specialize in the diagnosis and treatment of ILDs, a group of disorders characterized by inflammation and scarring of the lung tissue (interstitium). Examples include idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF), sarcoidosis, and connective tissue disease-associated ILDs.

Pulmonologists play a crucial role in smoking cessation efforts, providing counseling, support, and pharmacotherapy to help patients quit smoking and reduce their risk of developing smoking-related lung diseases.

Pulmonologists may refer patients with chronic respiratory conditions to pulmonary rehabilitation programs, which involve structured exercise training, education, and support to improve symptoms, functional capacity, and quality of life.
